Carpet: Pro or DIY?
Everyone thinks that using a do-it-yourself installation is the best way to save money. The fact is that it is a difficult job for an unprofessional and in most cases it is easier to call a professional for the installation.
Specialty Tools
You need special tools for a carpet installation like a knee kicker and a power stretcher. You may rent the tools from a rental store but it isn`t so easy to use them when you`re not familiar with them. So even it appears to be more expensive to ask for a professional, it worth the money.
Knowledge and Expertise
Professional carpet installers should be well versed in the installation of the carpet padding. The padding will assure more cushion on the feet when walked on, a better stain protection and prevent the carpet fibers from getting matt. The installer need also to be able to properly cut the carpet to account for heating and cooling registers, and be prepared to remove baseboards. If you are purchasing a carpet that will need seams pushed together, this is an extra skill found in most professional installers
Questions to Ask Yourself to Help You Decide
- Will I be able to lay the carpet and padding down to the manufacturer’s specifications?
- If not, you risk the chance of voiding the carpet’s warranty.
- Am I able to stretch the carpet and padding? Do I secure the carpet using glue/tack strips? If you don’t, the final installation may be a waste of time, money and effort.
- Are there any odd shaped corners that I’ll have to work around? This complicates the job considerably, and attempting it on your own may ruin the final installation.
- Will the carpet and padding need to be trimmed down to my width for installation?
- The carped padding is bought in specific dimensions. It comes in 12 and 15 foot widths. Probably the carpet will not perfectly fit so you`ll have to trim it. If you`ll do it by your own and make a mistake you may ruin the entire installation.
- Are the tools I need available or easy to secure? You probably will not have access to the tools you need, without renting them. Is the cost of renting them going to save you any money compared to hiring a professional? Is the amount saved really worth the chance of botching the installation?
Overall Cost
The installer will get his fee by the square yard of carpet installed and doesn’t include the cost of the carpet and padding material.
If they have to clear the room and remove the old carpet or flooring, look for even more charges.
If you have on the floor the old carpet and you need to remove it and you have to clear the room, you have to prepare for more charges. You may clear it yourself to save money. Don`t forget, this cost is in addition to the amont of carpet and padding you purchase to cover the room. When you calculate your investment cumulate the carpet price and the installation of it. If the professional installation make the investment above your budget, simply choose a less expensive carpet or wait until you can afford both.
