Laminate Flooring Underlayment
Underlayment is very imporant for you laminate floor installation. It has the purpose of adding a level of comfort to laminate floors, providing soundproofing qualities, helps to protect the flooring from moisture, and helps to even out minor imperfections of the subfloor.
We put together a list of the major types of underlayment. Each has different characteristics and will add a specific benefit to your flooring project:
Standard Foam Underlayment
This is the generally used type of laminate flooring underlayment. The foam padding is usually measuring 1/8 inch thick, and is available in different roll sizes.
This kind of underlayment is useed in areas where minimal moisture is expected. Furthermore, it can also be used in conjunction with a plastic sheet. Foam underlayment only provides a minimal level of sound reduction.
Combination Underlayment
This type of underlayment is generally the same as a standard foam underlayment for laminate flooring. Combination underlayment comes with a moisture barrier attached. This feature has the purpose of preventing moisture from seeping into your laminate from underneath. Its thickness is the same as a standard foam underlayment.
Acoustical/Sound Dampening Underlayment
This type of underlayment is used to reduce the hollow sound created when walking on a laminate floor. It can be found in a variety of materials (for example cork and felt), and it generally comes with a moisture barrier. A moisture barrier placed directly over the subfloor should exist before installing a acoustical underlayment without a moisture barrier attached.
Vinyl-Backed Underlay
This underlay is a practical option for laminate flooring installations because it comes in an easy-to-install tile form. Vinyl-backed underlay lays flat during installation and provides noise-proofing qualities. If moisture-proofing is a priority, the seams must be sealed.
