Types of manufactured decking
In addition to wood decking materials, there are a few more choices if you’re not satisfied with having wood for your deck. Here you will find alternative options for building your deck without resorting to wood.
Composite decking
Wood and other materials have been mixed in order to create the material used in composite decking. The composite will be just as aesthetically pleasing, while at the same time maintaining the endurance of a wooden deck. The composite deck is becoming the favored choice due to its cheapness, being available in a wider range of styles and colors and it’s more accepting of all climate changes. A composite deck mostly consists of plastic and wooden fibers, but there are others which are made with more than just these two materials.
Composite decks prove to be less work when it comes to maintenance, due to the fact that they’re resistant to decay, moisture, insects, and are deemed ‘green’ since most of the materials they use to make them are recycled ones. However, these do tend to pale with age, leaving a diversity of colors on the deck. Some materials used in composite decking may be flammable, so consider what you choose to have around your deck if going with this choice.
Vinyl Decking
PVC or vinyl materials are used in making vinyl decking. The vinyl can lessen your maintenance needs of your deck, unlike composite or wooden materials. It can be found as a solid or a hollow form. The hollow ones come up ahead of solid ones regarding strength, and provide nearly the same solidity; however, some cases present themselves where a solid board is the only choice.
Vinyl decks do not fade, peel, crack or splinter. A rail and trim system is required in order to match the look as you would do with other decking material, and those are rarely available, being dependent on brand. With a vinyl deck, the fasteners are usually hidden and it is much less vulnerable to rot and decay in comparison with a wooden deck. Vinyl decks have a higher cost than pressure-treated wood decks, and will not have that natural appeal of real wood; some find it to be annoying after a period of time when it starts squeaking.
Building a deck can become dependent on things like climate conditions, a limited budget, matching it with your house and having what you want and need available to you. The important thing is that you try building one and enjoy a new addition to your home.
